Health and Safety Policies
A Health and Safety Policy is a legal requirement under The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act (HSWA) 1974 and will form part of your safety management process.
About Health and Safety Policies
A health and safety policy sets out your organisations’ general approach to health and safety. It details how you, as an employer, will manage health and safety in your business and it should clearly say who does what, when and how.
It is a legal requirement under current Health and Safety legislation that all business’ employing 5 or more employees must have a written Health and Safety Policy.
A Health and Safety Policy comprises of three sections:
Statement of Intent; The statement of general policy on health and safety at work sets out your commitment to managing health and safety effectively, and what you want to achieve
Responsibility and Accountability; The responsibility section sets out who is responsible for specific actions within the business.
Arrangements; The arrangements section contains the detail of what you are going to do in practice to achieve the aims set out in your statement of intent.

Why you need us?
Below are some frequently asked questions relating to health and safety polices but should you have any further queries please contact Cyan Safety and will be happy to assist.
Do I need to have a written health and safety policy?
If you employee 5 or more employee then the short answer to this question is YES you do.
Do I need a safety policy if I am a sole trader?
For businesses with fewer than five employees, for example, the law doesn’t require you to write down your risk assessment or health and safety policy. All that’s required of many businesses is to make sure people are protected from harm caused by their business’s work activities.
Would you advise me to have a safety policy even though it’s not a legal requirement?
The answer to this question is yes, for a business perspective.
If your business is contracting or tendering for any external work then most tender processes will ask for their health and safety policy and examples of risk assessments. So even if your business doesn’t legally require them is makes good business sense to produce them anyway.
Also, bear in mind that when your business grows and your employee your 5th person then all the hard work is already done!
Who needs to see my Health and Safety Policy?
Most companies display there Health and Safety Policy “Statement of Intent” in the workplace and make available there other sections of the policy on request.
Is a health and Safety Policy difficult to write and compile?
If we said yes then we would be in conflict with our company belief that “safety is simple” so the answer this question is no. What is critical is that the policy includes all the relevant sections and information relating to your company and to comply with the law. Cyan Safety can develop your full health and safety policy without the worry of getting things right.
We can assist your company in all aspects of managing health and safety and fulfilling your legal responsibilities.
